The Week in small Pleasures…

Hello out there, how is January going in your little corner?

Here in Ireland the morning is dark as night, the day rises slowly in grey, the earth is brown and thick with matted twists of grass on clotted clay.  The trees are silent & black and bare, heavy with years and dew, only thoughts of spring, that eternal thing, is the hope that will see us through.

That and food!

Thoughts of spring plus joy of food is getting me through: )

eating pleasure

In the past week some great food related pleasures included:

  • Discovering a beautiful & inspiring food blog called Manger
  • Watching two back to back episodes of River Cottage.
  • Watching ‘Indian Food Made Easy’ on BBC1 on a Saturday morning
  • Trying out a recipe from the programme with fantastic results & sharing it here ‘Succulent Chicken Tikka Wraps’
  • Reading my new Avoca Cafe Cookbook that Laura bought me for Christmas
  • Planning a dinner party that is going to happen soon Edel!!!
  • Planning what I’m going to buy and cook in the weeks ahead and enjoying a blended desire for warming, comforting food like my Beef & Guinness Stew (recipe coming soon) as well as for fresher, lighter dishes that herald the coming of spring.
  • Thoughts of our garden and what to grow this year! I catch myself staring wistfully at the hill thinking, soon, soon we will be there digging and planting, weeding and watering & I can’t wait for it!

eating outside

So many people seem to torture themselves in January but I think we should just eat and be happy, life is too short to do anything else.

How was your week?  What’s getting you through these dark winter days or maybe it’s summer where you are?

Next week on the blog I’ll be sharing more thoughts on food, eating and health as well as some favourite cookbooks and goodness knows what else!

In the meantime have a great weekend everyone, chat soon : )

I can’t wait to be out in the garden properly either. My bulbs are popping up early because it’s been so mild, not too happy that they’re early but still happy to see them heralding Spring.

    • The Great Gatsby – Language, Style, Emotion… May 18, 2013
Sometimes when I go to see a movie I wonder what’s wrong with people because if I listened to reviews what would I be watching? Would it be, as seems the case with awards ceremonies that the movies deemed to deal with the ‘big’ subjects would win out? Industry ‘cool’ movies deal with politics, crime, […]

Hello everyone something different on the blog today. My first stab at ‘flash fiction.’ I won’t say too much about it but I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing it and of course I’d love to hear your thoughts : ) Web Definition: Flash fiction is a style of fictional literature or fiction of extreme […]

    • Memories of May May 13, 2013
May is the loveliest of months. Some of my favourite memories are from this time of year. I got married in May so I have an anniversary coming soon to look forward to. In May 2007 we kicked off our honeymoon in Barcelona. We took a mediteranean cruise from there with Royal Carribbean on the […]

“In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.”  ― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby I love glamour, literature and style and and few decades were more stylish than the 1920′s, few books or writers more stylish than F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby. […]

    • Coming up Roses by Martha Gilheaney May 7, 2013
As umbrellas magically transform into impossibly long stemmed roses I feel a growing excitement. For the second year I will know what summer is. Rome, like most European cities is dark and gloomy in winter and while the idea of globe trotting in a direction so as to shun the darkest season is appealing, my […]

    • Make my Chilli…Love me Forever May 6, 2013
I’m  not sure if this concoction would officially qualify as Chilli con Carne but it’s sooo good and if you make it you are going to love me. You won’t be able to help yourself! Don’t be put off by a long list of ingredients, once you’ve gathered them together it’s easy, it’s super healthy, […]

    • May Day May 2, 2013
The lovely month of May. Yesterday was May Day or to to give its pagan name Bealtaine the beginning of summer with ancient traditions in Ireland of flower wreaths and bonfires to protect cattle, crops and people and to encourage growth. I have memories of the doorsteps in town bedecked with flowers on this day. […]

As you know I have a passionate interest in creativity and intellectual immersion and that recently I’ve been making these more central to my every day. This makes me very happy but as a mother can be challenging so I was interested to read that award winning documentary editor Caren McCaleb and director/producer Mary Trunk […]

    • Summer Play List April 28, 2013
Yesterday the sun shone we spent a few hours in a garden centre and now all I can think about is summer. Isn’t it funny how even in a climate like ours memories of summer days and hopes for long hot summers never fade. We are always hoping. When I need summer I sometimes cook […]

One of my favourite subjects for the longest time now is my undying love and awe of a beautiful person and incredible actor.  Andy Whitfield a Welsh engineer and actor played the role of Spartacus in one of the most violent and sex filled series to ever grace our screens, definitely not my usual kind of […]
