Inspire me…

Today I’m sharing a selection of art and words that are beautiful, inspiring and represent ‘elevated living’ to me.  I hope you find something you like here too…

“I am an excitable person who only understands life lyrically, musically, in whom feelings are much stronger as reason. I am so thirsty for the marvellous that only the marvellous has power over me. Anything I can not transform into something marvellous, I let go. Reality doesn’t impress me. I only believe in intoxication, in ecstasy, and when ordinary life shackles me, I escape, one way or another. No more walls.”
― Anaïs Nin

I own these serigraph prints by the wonderful Itzchak Tarkay, the one on the left is my favourite and was also painted on by the artist who sadly died in June 2012

“It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.”

This beautiful painting ‘A Fair Day, Mayo’ by my favourite artist Jack Butler Yeats is the most expensive Irish painting ever sold at €1 million in 2011.  See some of his work at the National Gallery in Dublin (adm is free) and sometimes at the Model Niland Gallery in Sligo.

“I must be a mermaid. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living.”

Letter

Wonderful Yeats again… This one is called ‘About to Write a Letter’…

“There is no time for cut-and-dried monotony. There is time for work. And time for love. That leaves no other time.”

I love the work of Salvador Dali, Owen loves Monet. Obviously he understands a hell of a lot more than me though! We only paid for one guided tour when in Florence and I learned so so much, it really stood to me for all the other galleries we were in, I could pick put the era even!!! We are for Dublin tomorrow and thinking what to do for the morning (Euan finishes school at 2) and I think a trip to the National Gallery may be in order-thanks for the idea!!!

    • Memories of May May 13, 2013
May is the loveliest of months. Some of my favourite memories are from this time of year. I got married in May so I have an anniversary coming soon to look forward to. In May 2007 we kicked off our honeymoon in Barcelona. We took a mediteranean cruise from there with Royal Carribbean on the […]

    • Coming up Roses by Martha Gilheaney May 7, 2013
As umbrellas magically transform into impossibly long stemmed roses I feel a growing excitement. For the second year I will know what summer is. Rome, like most European cities is dark and gloomy in winter and while the idea of globe trotting in a direction so as to shun the darkest season is appealing, my […]

I’m  not sure if this concoction would officially qualify as Chilli con Carne but it’s sooo good and if you make it you are going to love me. You won’t be able to help yourself! • May Day May 2, 2013
The lovely month of May. Yesterday was May Day or to to give its pagan name Bealtaine the beginning of summer with ancient traditions in Ireland of flower wreaths and bonfires to protect cattle, crops and people and to encourage growth. I have memories of the doorsteps in town bedecked with flowers on this day. […]

    • Summer Play List April 28, 2013
Yesterday the sun shone we spent a few hours in a garden centre and now all I can think about is summer. Isn’t it funny how even in a climate like ours memories of summer days and hopes for long hot summers never fade. We are always hoping. When I need summer I sometimes cook […]

One of my favourite subjects for the longest time now is my undying love and awe of a beautiful person and incredible actor.  Andy Whitfield a Welsh engineer and actor played the role of Spartacus in one of the most violent and sex filled series to ever grace our screens, definitely not my usual kind of […]
