Things I Learned Saturday

On Saturday I was in Dublin for my sister Martha’s 30th Birthday celebrations. Aside from great company, lots of laughs, food, music and dancing at The Clarendon and Odessa here’s a few random things happened, discovered or learned…

1. I can’t go out anymore, it takes days to recover, days, such a time waste. I don’t need to be drinking, just out very late. The funny thing is I can get by on very little sleep normally, five hours is plenty, and in most ways have more energy than I’ve ever had but going out kills me and no matter what time I go to bed I’m up with the lark, outwardly fresh, inwardly wrecked. P.S. I didn’t really learn this on Saturday just this summer generally.

Lesson: I don’t want to go out.

2. Just when you think you are past it you go to a city or just anywhere with life in it and get a massive ego boost from both gay men and straight men, chatted up and complements to beat the band. The gay guy comps were the best :)

Lesson: Nothing ages a woman like living in the country.

I was called ‘very sensible’ for drinking tea at four in the morning, yep.

Lesson: There’s nothing sensible about four in the morning.

3. For the first time in my life I was pressed to smoke weed. She was some random stranger, the girlfriend of a roommate of one of Martha’s friends twice removed or something like that. I mean properly pressed, arm pulling and everything plus this memorable line ‘You need a challenge, challenge is good for you‘ Bahahaha, can you believe it? This never even happened me in college!

Lesson: From Salvador Dali, ‘I don’t do drugs, I am drugs.’

4. I slept with a cat. If you know me you know this is big. Martha’s cat is new and not allowed out at night yet. His name is O’Brien and when you surprise him he meep’s, very winning. He didn’t think much of the downstairs festivities and here I was in his safe place. There was nothing for it, we had to share a bed, after all he was there first I was just the sensible tea drinking visitor. If anyone had told me this would ever happen I’d have said not a chance but with each passing day I turn ever more into a cat lady. By morning, two hours later, we were happy out. I’ve shared a bed with worse.

Lesson: A leopard can change her spots.

what a laugh Jane and again I can relate to all the sentiments , takes me days to recover now and I love wine but it hates me . Sleeping with the cat is nothing new I am a little ashamed to admit as growing up in Ireland the cats place was not in the bedroom . You are looking amazing so no surprise on all the compliments ,

Thanks Ann Marie :) I love wine and it doesn’t mind me, so long as I get my five hours in bed that is!!!

Fabulous quotes!! I’m in stitches reading that!! Especially, “Nothing ages a woman like living in the Country”. I’ve aged 20 years in the last 7 since moving here, become an agroraphobic battery chicken and definitely feeling the early stages of brain shrinkage!! And cat ladydom comes to us all! :-) Great stuff Jane! Glad you had a great time! xo

Yes, I know what you mean, I’d have said the same last week, even now possibly! Ah he was sweet though, I love his little meep :)

Nothing ages you more than your little sister getting older. But the stories are worth the telling. So so funny. Peer pressure and four am tes and the sweet meeping kitty, your adventure was enjoyable to all. Thank you dear Jane. I feel a little younger already.
    Love,
    Shalagh
Ps Compliments is compliments. You’re a hot tamale.

That’s one I haven’t had before! Thanks Shalagh

    • Getting Ready for Christmas! December 8, 2014
Good morning friends, I’m not one for panic, overwhelm is more my thing but when it gets this close to Christmas and you... 1. Live in deepest darkest countryside 2. Don’t drive (I do drive now but haven’t advanced to driving to the nearest shopping towns yet) 3. Haven’t embraced online shopping (I’m not sure […]

‘She woke early, not long after dawn. She’d been drifting and dreaming since four with the birds, too excited to sleep, too enlivened to care. Thoughts of the night washed over her. Had it all been a dream? The puddle of dress on the floor told her no, it was real, as summer storms were […]

    • Back in the Zone November 28, 2014
Morning all. Following an angsty return to the book earlier this week things have improved. First day after a break is always the worst but I’m well into the first read through of the hard copy now and hope to finish it this morning before school runs and general mayhem resume. That was the plan […]

    • More Afraid of Jumping than Falling November 25, 2014
Hello friends, how are you today? I’ve been in avoidance mode for a while but decided today was the day and that made me feel anxious. Time is moving and I’ve stayed away too long. Back to the book I go. A printed copy has been lying in the drawer for weeks, waiting for me to […]

    • Fire November 24, 2014
Continuing on from yesterdays post about our chimney fire on Friday, read it HERE and it all just happened so fast. I wasn’t long back from picking the girls up when I noticed a bright light in the stone alcove around the kitchen range. At this point Ernest Hemingway (our cat) bolted and the ‘light’ […]

    • Dreams November 23, 2014
I had the strangest dream last week. All sleeping dreams are strange I think but this one I’ve had more than once and I just couldn’t fathom, 1. Why I had it so often lately. I mean it’s true I’m closely wedded to this stove. I talk about it, cook on it, boil the kettle on […]

    • Talk to Me November 20, 2014
I read a LOT, I scan, I skim and take it all in, my interests know no stop. It’s true I touch on a wide range of thoughts and things here on the blog but believe me that’s nothing, just the tip of the iceberg and meanwhile I connect, forecast, predict at brake neck speed […]

I know I said a picture post but while your’re here you might consider checking out my new ‘About Me’ and let me know what you think, over there preferably or here, also good. If you would like to add a testimonial I’d be only delighted, let me have it! Thank you : )  The […]

    • If You Can’t Take the Beauty, Get Out of my Kitchen November 12, 2014
Our kitchen revamp’s not yet finished but it’s well underway. We’ve papered the two sides in our jade green, bird and vine wallpaper and painted the gable in pale blue grey. I’ve added some of my elegant ‘girl lamps’, changed some curtains about, painted the inside of the cupboards yellow and now I’m thinking art. […]

    • Is This Real Life or Just Fantasy? November 4, 2014
Dear friends, it’s a playschool morning so I’ve a few precious hours in which to DO something that will make me happy for the rest of the day or to do nothing and be rightly pissed off. I have this blueprint I can’t seem to shake where it’s only the things I get done before […]
