Things I Learned Saturday

On Saturday I was in Dublin for my sister Martha’s 30th Birthday celebrations. Aside from great company, lots of laughs, food, music and dancing at The Clarendon and Odessa here’s a few random things happened, discovered or learned…

1. I can’t go out anymore, it takes days to recover, days, such a time waste. I don’t need to be drinking, just out very late. The funny thing is I can get by on very little sleep normally, five hours is plenty, and in most ways have more energy than I’ve ever had but going out kills me and no matter what time I go to bed I’m up with the lark, outwardly fresh, inwardly wrecked. P.S. I didn’t really learn this on Saturday just this summer generally.

Lesson: I don’t want to go out.

2. Just when you think you are past it you go to a city or just anywhere with life in it and get a massive ego boost from both gay men and straight men, chatted up and complements to beat the band. The gay guy comps were the best :)

Lesson: Nothing ages a woman like living in the country.

I was called ‘very sensible’ for drinking tea at four in the morning, yep.

Lesson: There’s nothing sensible about four in the morning.

3. For the first time in my life I was pressed to smoke weed. She was some random stranger, the girlfriend of a roommate of one of Martha’s friends twice removed or something like that. I mean properly pressed, arm pulling and everything plus this memorable line ‘You need a challenge, challenge is good for you‘ Bahahaha, can you believe it? This never even happened me in college!

Lesson: From Salvador Dali, ‘I don’t do drugs, I am drugs.’

4. I slept with a cat. If you know me you know this is big. Martha’s cat is new and not allowed out at night yet. His name is O’Brien and when you surprise him he meep’s, very winning. He didn’t think much of the downstairs festivities and here I was in his safe place. There was nothing for it, we had to share a bed, after all he was there first I was just the sensible tea drinking visitor. If anyone had told me this would ever happen I’d have said not a chance but with each passing day I turn ever more into a cat lady. By morning, two hours later, we were happy out. I’ve shared a bed with worse.

Lesson: A leopard can change her spots.

what a laugh Jane and again I can relate to all the sentiments , takes me days to recover now and I love wine but it hates me . Sleeping with the cat is nothing new I am a little ashamed to admit as growing up in Ireland the cats place was not in the bedroom . You are looking amazing so no surprise on all the compliments ,

Thanks Ann Marie :) I love wine and it doesn’t mind me, so long as I get my five hours in bed that is!!!

Fabulous quotes!! I’m in stitches reading that!! Especially, “Nothing ages a woman like living in the Country”. I’ve aged 20 years in the last 7 since moving here, become an agroraphobic battery chicken and definitely feeling the early stages of brain shrinkage!! And cat ladydom comes to us all! :-) Great stuff Jane! Glad you had a great time! xo

Yes, I know what you mean, I’d have said the same last week, even now possibly! Ah he was sweet though, I love his little meep :)

Nothing ages you more than your little sister getting older. But the stories are worth the telling. So so funny. Peer pressure and four am tes and the sweet meeping kitty, your adventure was enjoyable to all. Thank you dear Jane. I feel a little younger already.
    Love,
    Shalagh
Ps Compliments is compliments. You’re a hot tamale.

Good oh my goodness afternoon already. Another morning gone like so much sand through my fingers and what have I to show for it? Yesterday I read back over the first six chapters of my book for the first time in a long time and knew, that when this ‘most intensive edit yet’ is finished, […]

    • Building a Home Library May 15, 2015
I grew up in a house of readers and when I was young I read all the time. We went to the library every Friday and every Friday I took home seven books because that was the limit. I carried them up to bed and down again in the morning. I can still feel the […]

    • Sky above me, Earth below me, Fire within me… May 13, 2015
Today…I’ve been editing for my book, it’s going well and was much helped by an open window and wind making the curtains billow. I’ve been reclaiming the house after my weekend away, restoring energy, clearing the pathways. I’ve been walking out in the wind wild lane, it is deeply alive and I feel the same. […]

    • Spilling on to a Page May 2, 2015
I woke to rain. Gusts of wind lifted the curtain to show slices of grey sky dripping. I shivered, turned my pillow to the cold side, heaven. I reached for my glasses and phone before remembering, I’m on a phone/social media break-ish for the long weekend, though someone please explain how to do that when […]

    • Practicing Self Care April 24, 2015
This week I took a break from editing my book to take care of myself. I felt the need for a brain break. Because I’m not a great sleeper, or one for relaxing, I’ve had to find other ways to trick myself into rest, meditation and good health, namely food, art, conversation, nature and grooming. […]

I’m amazed and delighted and feel sure that I couldn’t deserve it. I want to say a massive […]

    • Easter Holidays April 9, 2015
Please forgive my blogging absence I have been staycationing, recharging at home. As discussed in my last post Easter Holidays came, are still going on, editing is at a standstill, life goes on. It has not been bad, it has not been bad at all. For one thing I love the lack of routine, I […]

    • Editing A Novel While Mothering – It’s Not for Sissies But It Is For Me March 27, 2015
As you know I’m editing my first novel. This is my fourth draft…or fifth draft? I’ve lost count, all I know is this is the most detailed painstaking one yet. It’s difficult to say exactly how long I can spend on just one paragraph or one sentence but; hours, hours, hours. Projections for finishing this […]
